Department of forest rehabilitation and melioration

Based on principle functions and objectives of department, following priority trends of researches have been studied and still are going on:

Thorough studying of protective-ecological functions of Georgian mountain forests: hydrological and anti erosion role of mountain forests of different formation has been revealed, effect of different cutting systems on water regime and erosion processes have been defined, as well as optimal structure of sustainable coppices for strengthening of water-protective functions of mountain forests, stabilization of river water regime and prevention of erosion, and optimal structure of anti land-slide and anti snow-slip forests, norms for selecting out of anti-erosion forests, protective role of river side forest belts and principles of their planting. Recommendations have been worked out for the strengthening of forest-melioration measures of fighting against erosion caused by wind and water. Effects of field protective forest belts on the crop-capacity of Georgian agrarian cultures by natural-climate regions have been studied, effective constructions of field protective belts by ecological conditions of separate regions have been worked out, present state of forest planted in Tbilisi neighborhood and peculiarities of their growth-development have been studied, methods of the reconstruction of degraded forest coppices have been worked out, as well as schemes of mountain forest cultural works, biologically sustainable types of forest cultures in mountain conditions have been defined. Plantation method of cultivation of valuable wood species has been developed. Researches are carried out for studying of biological properties of rare and disappearing wood species and for preserving their gene pool and defining reproductive measures.
