Department of forest biodiversity, planning and expertise

Department was formed in 2006. After its formation three, existed in institute laboratories united, namely - forest studies, forestry, forest arrangement laboratory, forest soils and microbiology laboratory and wood studies laboratory. All abovementioned laboratories have functioned since the foundation of institute (1945).

Based on principle functions and objectives, researches have been studied and still are going on in following priority trends:

Genesis, bio-ecology, growth-development, formation, structure, natural renewal of forests of basic formations and other forests of Georgia, questions concerning biodiversity of abovementioned forest types and scientifically approbated new technologies of their rehabilitation-renewal; forest types, production of selected economy by forest types; tables of spruce, fir (abies) and beech all-aged coppice growth process in accordance with dynamic of taxation functions were worked out; criteria of economical estimation of resort and recreational functions of forests, parameters of selecting of national parks and technological criteria of improvement of sustainability of recreation forests have been defined; effect of environmental pollution on forests of different wood species has been studied. Assortment and goods tables of main forest-formation wood species have been elaborated where regional indices of forest taxation are given; studying of creating of dead cover in forest biogeocenosis, their structures, chemical and water-managing properties. Dead cover types of forest are picked out, their stocks and processes of their transformation are defined; investigation of processes of biological circulation of substances in main cenosis of forest; biological activity of soils in main formations of forest, in the complex with microbiological processes taking place in them. Effect of separate forest formations on species contents and quantity of soil micro-flora, vital activity of soil microbiocenosis in connection with forest species contents, coppice density and location conditions.
