Department of forest protection

This department was formed in 1946 at the Scientific Research Institute of Plant Protection, and well known forester entomologist professor Shalva Supatashvili became the head of it.

Following trends have been studied and still are under research:

1. Entomologic - revealing of diversity of forest pest species, defining of area of their spread, their biological peculiarities and revealing-studying of their entomophages. Prognosis of their mass reproduction due to their hemolimphatic analysis.

2. Phytopathological - for the working out of measures of revealing, studying and sanitation of diseases of principle wood species of forest.

3. Biological control of pests - investigation-revealing of local bio-agents (entomophages, microorgamisms, nematodes, gregarines and etc.) from populations of main forest economy pests, selection of aggressive forms among them. Specifying their trophic relations with the different phases of insect development. Testing of new biological, safe for environment preparations against forest pests, defining of optimal doses and susceptible phases in conditions of Georgia.

Specialists of department have studied and executed fighting measures with Georgian foresters against forest harmful pests, such as: Ips sextendatus; Ips typographus; Dendroctonus micans; Dendrolimus pini; Dioriqtryctria splendidella; Neodiprion sertifer;

Leave rodont pests: Lymantria dispar; Operophtera brumata; Nygmia Phaerrhea; Eupareophora exarmata (which was found for the first time in the former USSR fauna in Georgia by A. Supatashvili) and others.

At present scientists are actively working for the regulation of quantity, improvement of bio-method and working out of integrated managing system, for the definition of causative reasons of oak and beech drying up and the working out of practical recommendations for their sanitation; works are carried out for the improvement-renewal of entomologic collections.

Scientists of department accomplish orders connecting with forest pathology investigations.
